Study abroad -this summer- in Greece

Mentor in Greece, in partnership with Hellenic American University, presents in the summer of 2019, two highly curated credit-bearing study abroad programs aimed at introducing the history and culture of ancient Greece through personalized thematic routes and thought-provoking on-site seminars and workshops. ‘Land of the Gods’ and ‘The world of Alexander’ form a sweeping panorama of the Greek world at the time of its greatest achievements!

Land of the gods: polis and sanctuary in ancient Greece (2-15 Jun 2019) is the quintessential introduction to the world of the ancient Greeks and their major contributions to the development of western civilization. This experiential program invites participants on a grand tour of five evocative sites that represent all aspects of ancient Greek culture, society, religion, and mythology. The politics and art of classical Athens, the residual indefatigable athletic spirit and search for glory in ancient Olympia, the astounding luminescence of earth and sky on the sacred island of Delos (birthplace of Apollo), the mystifying aura surrounding the Great Mysteries in Eleusis, and the breathtaking natural beauty and oracular history of the temple of Apollo at Delphi form a quintet of destinations where a quest for our identity is fulfilled.

The World of Alexander (30 Jun-13 Jul 2019) examines the birth and growth of the Greek kingdom of Macedonia, from the time the goats of King Perdiccas selected the site of his future palace, to the phenomenal expansion of Macedonian power and glory during the reign of Philip II and Alexander the Great. Participants will explore Aigai, the first capital of Macedon and burial ground of kings; Pella, the birthplace of Alexander the Great; and Dion, the most important Macedonian sanctuary dedicated to Zeus and the site where Alexander performed spectacular sacrifices on the eve of his campaign against the Persian Empire. The program combines hikes on Mount Olympus and visits to pioneering archaeological museums in Vergina and Thessaloniki that illustrate the diverse and vibrant life and culture of ancient Macedonia. Participants will have the opportunity to study the work and ideas of Aristotle, a native of Stagira who tutored Alexander for seven years. The program also examines the emergence of Greek language and culture as the bridge that united the disparate societies between the Mediterranean Sea and the foothills of the Himalaya into a Hellenistic civilization.

Both programs are designed with an academic purpose, therefore they are credit-bearing (provided by Hellenic American University, which is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges) and consist of seminars, on-site seminars, and academic assignments.
